Rockwool, manufacturers of non-combustible stone wool insulation, has developed a bespoke insulation system for the refurbishment of the grade II-listed Barbican Estate in London’s Square Mile

The project, which started on site in October last year, involves insulating the top storeys of three of the estate’s buildings which were being converted from offices into residential units.

However, the tight radius of the barrel roofs meant that traditional insulation board could not be used as it wouldn’t bend enough to fit the roof. The team came up with an alternative which uses the company’s 40mm Hardrock SPA roof insulation board with special grooves cut into the base of the board to allow for bending around the tight radius, fitting the roofs snugly.
