West London contractor building more than 550 student flats
Henry Construction has bagged the second phase of the £200m project to overhaul the former Preston Barracks site in Brighton.
The west London contractor has been appointed by residential specialist Scape Student Living, U+I’s partner on the second phase of the project, to build 555 student beds at the site on the town’s Lewes Road.
Early works began at the start of November, and the scheme (pictured) is due to wrap up by summer 2020.
In July it was announced Graham Construction had been chosen to carry out the redevelopment’s first phase – a 50,000ft2 hub designed to provide affordable workspace for start-ups and SMEs.
The final phase of the scheme, the construction of over 360 homes, is due to get under way in the second quarter of 2019.
The Preston Barracks project is part of a £200m masterplan being delivered by U+I in partnership with Brighton university and Brighton & Hove council.
Architects working on the masterplan include Hassel, Studio Egret West, TP Bennett and Stride Treglown.
As well as student accommodation, it will include new homes, academic buildings, shops and leisure facilities.
