Saint Gobain Isover has launched what it calls an “intelligent climate membrane”, designed for timber-frame construction.
The company says the membrane is good for air leakage control, moisture management and protection against toxic fumes. Based on polyamide rather than polyethylene, which is used more commonly for vapour barriers, the Vario climate membrane adapts to changing climatic conditions. In the winter, when temperature and relative humidity drop, the micropores of the membrane close, preventing vapour from the warm interior diffusing into the timber structure and so protecting it against interstitial condensation. In the summer, when relative humidity and temperature rise, the micropores open allowing vapour to escape.
