Cabe praises 鈥榓ccomplished鈥 Herzog & de Meuron design for its architectural qualities and 鈥榬igorous鈥 sustainability strategy
Herzog & de Meuron鈥檚 extension to the Tate Modern has been given the green light by Southwark council.
The 拢215m brick pyramidoid building received high praise both from the planning authorities and Cabe, the government鈥檚 design watchdog.
Councillor James Gurling, the committee chair for Southwark council, said: 鈥淭his challenging and iconic extension will not only help people move around the exhibitions in greater comfort but also guide them outside to enjoy the lovely public space in Bankside and other parts of Southwark.鈥
Cabe was barely less fulsome in its praise, calling Herzog & de Meuron鈥檚 building a 鈥渇irst rate addition to London鈥檚 contemporary architecture鈥 and singling out its 鈥渇ormal and rigorous sustainability strategy鈥 which it said was 鈥渧ery accomplished鈥.
Last year, the building鈥檚 design underwent a radical transformation from its original incarnation as a stack of glass boxes. Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota said at its unveiling in July it was a 鈥渕ore mature response to the brief鈥.
