Work on mixed-use scheme due to begin next year
Planning approval has been won for a 拢50m redevelopment of the Bircherley Green Shopping Centre in Hertford.
The scheme, designed by Corstorphine & Wright, will replace the 1980s shopping centre with a mixed-use development led by an 86-bed Premier Inn hotel alongside 4,800 m2 of retail, cafes and restaurants; 70 new apartments and refurbishment to an existing car park and bus station. Construction is due to start next year.
This 2.5-acre site sits on the River Lea, adjacent to a number of heritage assets and close to rail links to London at Hertford East and Hertford North stations.
The development team will now focus on finalising the planning conditions with the local planning authority, as well as progressing discussions with the NHS regarding the potential to accommodate a health centre within the scheme.
