Energy provider to decommission gas holders next to Battersea Power Station
National Grid has unveiled plans to decommission four giant gas holders next to Battersea Power Station in London to make way for an 800-home mixed use development scheme.
The site is located in the 16,000 home Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea (VNEB) Opportunity Area 鈥 a former industrial district in the heart of the capital, less than a mile from the Houses of Parliament.
Wandsworth Council鈥檚 deputy leader, Jonathan Cook, said: 鈥淛ust about every major landowner in the Opportunity Areas is now gearing up to redevelop their plot. By the time the process is complete hundreds of acres of industrial and derelict land will have been transformed into new housing, business hubs and shopping districts.鈥
National Grid major sites manager, Jim Moore, added: 鈥淚ts early days in the planning process but we鈥檙e looking at creating around 800 new homes on the site, plus shops, restaurants, caf茅s, and leisure spaces at ground floor level to draw people in and bring the development to life. We plan to start decommissioning the gas holders during the summer. Demolition and remediation work could start in 2012.鈥
The Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea (VNEB) Opportunity Area includes 450 acres of land, an area larger than Hyde Park, on the Thames riverside between Battersea Park and Lambeth Bridge.
