Contractor ranks top of league of construction suppliers most-used by government

Kier was the government鈥檚 most-used construction contractor in 2012 and 2013, with the firm winning 拢1.4产苍 of work over the period, according to newly-released figures.

The contractor ranked ahead of Balfour Beatty in second and Carillion in third in terms of public work won by contractors over the period.

The ranking was produced by thinktank the Institute of Government and data analysts Spend Network, based on analysis of 38 million transactions from 2012 and 2013 made publicly available by the government for the first time.

Eight construction firms ranked among the government鈥檚 top 20 most-used suppliers, with a combined 拢6.2bn of spend on the construction suppliers over the period. The remaining five, in order, were Willmott Dixon, Amey, Babcock, Interserve and Bam.

Kier ranked fifth in the overall table behind IT contractors HP and Capgemini, telecoms firm BT and outsourcing giant Capita, which also offers construction consultancy services.
