With the former mining village set to grow by more than 50% over the next 10 years under plans to build 1,200 new houses, the planned facilities will act as a vital hub for community activity.

Lead project manager Tom Pinnington said: 鈥淭he invitation to submit a stage two application to the Big Lottery Fund for 拢500,000 is a big step towards delivering this much needed project.鈥

The final project has been designed in partnership with Hartwell Architects and will include outdoor sports pitches and changing rooms as well as indoor sports, arts, community and social facilities.

The development will be phased with Phase One containing outdoor sports facilities and Phase Two focussing on the provision of new indoor facilities.

The project team recently submitted a detailed planning application for the scheme and funding contributions are also being finalised.

In addition to the Big Lottery Fund application, bids are also likely to be made to the Football Foundation, Sport England, the Rugby Football Union, the Coalfield Regeneration Trust and Dover District Council.

Capita Symonds will be working with the project Steering Group over the coming months to provide support in pulling together the detailed information for the final funding applications.
