Knauf Insulation has launched an environmentally friendly mineral wool insulation with lower embodied energy. Using its patented “Ecose Technology”, the insulation has a distinctive natural brown colour – rather than yellow – as a result of a new sustainable binder made from renewable materials rather than oil-based chemicals
According to the company, this reduces binder embodied energy by up to 70% compared to traditional oil based binders.
Made using sand and recycled glass bottles, the insulation does not contain artificial colours or added formaldehyde, resulting in environmental credentials of A+ in the BRE’s Green Guide.
The company says the insulation’s acoustic, thermal and fire protection – class A1 – properties are the same as the traditional mineral wool. As well as the brown colour, the insulation is also softer, making it easier to handle.
