The team working at BAA’s Heathrow Terminal 5 decided that the CDM Risk Register fell short of what they needed on such a large and hazardous project. So they took matters into their own hands and came up with the Red List. This is a register – listed on a spreadsheet that is available to all on the project intranet – of key activities that are hazardous to workers and to the environment, and that are prohibited unless no alternative can be found. The spreadsheet shows the level of risk, and those needing to find out more can click onto the entry to see what alternative methods and practices they should be employing. It is used from design stage, when consultants can use it to design out health and safety hazards, through to project completion and – as it also covers maintenance and repairs – well into the future.
