Regarding the RICS’ move to approach the government over visas (ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV, QS ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV, 17 November),
The question must be asked why employers in the UK are not doing more to train their own staff instead of poaching staff from overseas investment in the future!
Just imagine you are the head of a small practice overseas and some Brit arrives in town to poach your trained staff, the staff you’ve invested time and money in, hey ,who cares! Well we should. Why is it every time there is a shortage of skilled professionals people throw up their hands?
Where lies the future of the profession when we rely on outside sources to fill the gaps? Present supply and demand will allow fellow professionals the remuneration their skills demand. Bringing in non-EU professionals (from where?) will undercut salary inflation making the argument for investment in local staff hard to sustain. Why bother when you can hire from outside. Typical construction industry approach and a reflection of our inability to plan for the future.
