Design competition run by Mayor’s new design body will see six hot architects design plans for one-acre site
Up and coming architects FAT, Urban Salon and S333 are set to go head to head on a competition in South London, run by the mayor’s new architecture unit, Design for London.
Six young architecture practices have been asked to submit plans for a one-acre derelict industrial site in South London. The other practices invited to join the competition are: 6a architects, Brisac Gonzalez and de Rijke Marsh Morgan.
All six are either previous winners or finalists of the Architecture Foundation’s Next Generation Awards.
But it is not guaranteed that the plans will be built. A preferred design will be chosen in April and that architect will work up its plans to detailed planning application stage. Subject to a successful planning application, the winning architect might work with an LDA development partner to see the project through to completion.
Newly appointed head of Design for London Peter Bishop said the competition reflected his unit's plans for the capital. He said: "It is a practical example where Design for London can start to make London a better place for Londoners to live, work and move around in."
The former printing works site, Offley Works, consists of six buildings totalling around 6,400sq m floor space.
The competition is jointly run by the Architecture Foundation, London Development Agency and Design for London.
