Contractors claims use of solid cross-laminated timber on East London apartment block saved 892 tonnes of carbon
Willmott Dixon has completed construction of the biggest UK residential development using solid cross-laminated timber, which it said saved hundreds of tonnes of carbon.
The £6m Bridport House in Hackney, which includes 41 homes, saved 892 tonnes of carbon compared with traditional building methods, according to the contractor.
The use of the material also substantially reduced the weight of the building, which sits above a Victorian storm relief drain, necessitating a light frame structure.
Willmott Dixon also boasts the building is three times more air tight than building regulations require.
The scheme was designed by Karakusevic Carson Architects while the structural engineer was Peter Brett Associates and Eurban acted as engineer timber contractor.
