Redrow boss slammed for 鈥榗ynical鈥 remarks on sprinkler plans

A Welsh politician has hit out at Redrow boss Steve Morgan after he criticised the country鈥檚 plans to make sprinklers compulsory in new homes.

Welsh Assembly member Ann Jones branded Morgan 鈥渃ynical鈥 for claiming the 拢3,500 extra cost of installing sprinklers would hit housebuilding in Wales.

Morgan claimed the cost could threaten housing schemes in 鈥減oorer鈥 areas of the country.

But Labour鈥檚 Ann Jones criticised Morgan鈥檚 remarks in the Western Mail: 鈥淭his really is cynical stuff from Redrow.

鈥淭o threaten that this will stop the development of homes in poor areas and without backing it up with hard evidence is quite reckless.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got evidence from the US which compared housing development in counties with sprinklers to those without. They found 鈥榥o reduction鈥 in development at all.

鈥淩edrow is choosing threats over facts. That鈥檚 why it lost the argument in the long scrutiny process and I suspect the same will happen this time around.鈥
