Developers want site to rival St Pancras and Birmingham New Street

Plans to turn architect Grimshaw鈥檚 Eurostar terminal at London Waterloo into a retail hotspot to rival those at St Pancras and Birmingham New Street have been given the green light by Lambeth planners.

The work is being masterminded by London & Continental Railways and Network Rail and will see 12,500sq m of retail space over three floors at the London station.

New access links for rail passengers are also included in the designs and passengers will also see domestic services run from the reopened 20-24 platforms.

The Corstorphine & Wright-designed revamp of the terminal is part of the Wessex Capacity Improvement Programme at the station which is being handled by Network Rail.

Work will also include improving access to nearby Leake Street and Lower Marsh.

The terminal was the starting and stopping point for Eurostar services from 1994 through to 2007 before the service moved to St Pancras in north London.
