Contractor to carry out work on Barton Square part of development

Vinci has won a 拢75m deal to revamp the Trafford Centre鈥檚 Barton Square for shopping centre specialist Intu.

The firm, which in the spring saw Hammerson abort a 拢3.4bn takeover of the business because of deteriorating conditions in the UK retail industry, has owned the Manchester centre for more than seven years when it bought the complex off original developer Peel for 拢1.6bn.

Work on Barton Square began in 2006, eight years after Bovis Lend Lease completed the original building.

Intu said the latest revamp will see a new glass-domed roof added to this part of the centre and a fully redesigned interior.

The extension will be anchored by a Primark store and Intu鈥檚 regional managing director Colin Flinn said: 鈥淸The] new space [will have] a real 鈥榳ow factor鈥 that will bring more brands and unique experiences.鈥

Vinci is due to start work later this year and finish in early 2020.
