The Construction Products Association has become the latest trade body to lobby construction minister Margaret Hodge to ensure that all public sector projects abide by best practice standards set for the 2012 Olympics.
Simon Storer, spokesperson for the CPA, said the body would continue to lobby to introduce the commitments on public sector projects. He said: 鈥淗opefully, it will put an end to the myth that lowest price means best value and the perverse view of some in the OGC that reverse e-auctions will do anything but force lowest price to the detriment of the industry, the client and the end user.鈥
The CPA鈥檚 move follows a letter from the Specialist Engineering Contractors Group to chancellor Gordon Brown ahead of his pre-Budget statement. It calls for measures to ensure wider adoption of the 2012 commitments on public sector work.
The commitments are a set of best-practice measures, including 30-day payment periods, project bank accounts to safeguard payment through the supply chain and local training initiatives.
鈥 The London Development Agency and the five boroughs affected by the Games have set up a one-stop shop for employment opportunities during the Olympics. The project, called Legacy, will link established local labour and business initiatives.
