John McAslan to oversee conversion of Woolwich listed buildings and construction of new-build
Architect John McAslan + Partners is designing an “urban village” to be built on the site of the former Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, south-east London.
The 316-home scheme involves the conversion of 12,000m2 of listed buildings, though the front entrance of the academy will be retained. Developer Durkan Group bought the site in February last year.
The plans are subject to planning approval from Greenwich council. An outline development brief has been agreed with the authority, which supports the site’s new use. It will be built by Durkan New Homes, part of the Durkan Group, with consultants Hepher Dixon and Atkins.
The proposal involves converting listed buildings into flats and constructing new-build units behind them. The homes will mainly be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units, with some four and five-bedroom apartments.
The Ministry of Defence sold the site to Durkan Group for £15m, as part of a disposal of non-core assets. The scheme is part of a regeneration drive in Woolwich spearheaded by Berkeley Homes’ redevelopment of the Woolwich Arsenal site. The masterplan, drawn up by Broadway Malyan and Sergison Bates, involves residential units, shops, a museum and a cinema. McAslan was not available for comment.
• Alan Camp Architects has received planning permission for a 20-storey housing development in Plumstead, south-east London. The scheme, which includes a high-rise tower, will be built for ASRA Greater London Housing Association.
