Space Craft architect will retain historic mills in comtemporay makeover of 4.5 acre site.
Space Craft architect has recently applied for planning permission and listed building consent for a mixed use scheme for the 4.5 acre Longlands Mill site in Stalybridge, Cheshire.
This competition winning proposal for Urban Splash was selected beating a shortlist that included Ian Simpson, Walter Menteth, Patel Taylor and Union North.
Simon Humphreys, senior development manager for Urban Splash said: "Space Craft stood out because its ideas for a mixed-use urban village ensure the future of the surviving mill buildings through viable new uses and sympathetic alterations. Its plans imaginatively infuse the old with the new."
The site is positioned in the heart of Stalybridge between the River Tame and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Space Craft's proposals include the refurbishment of surviving mill buildings and complementary new buildings.
The proposal identifies opportunities beyond the confines of the immediate site, to improve the routes and public spaces, and to rejuvenate the retail potential of the existing shopping area.
Nik Randall, director of Space Craft architects, said: "We are very excited by the ideas we have developed for this project, especially in regards to the space to be opened up alongside the river Tame" said .
It is propose that there will be over 250 new homes, offices, retail space, cafés and restaurants. There is even potential for a hotel, as the town lies in the foothills of the Pennines.
Urban Splash and Space Craft are currently on site carrying out remedial works to restore the Grade ll Listed Longland's Mill complex, in readiness for its proposed refurbishment into apartments and commercial space later this year.
