Architects Grimshaw and Lifschutz Davidson have gained places on a seven-strong framework to undertake design work for two buildings at London’s South Bank University.
The work, part of the three-year redevelopment of the Southwark Campus, will provide a boost for the Elephant & Castle regeneration area.
Grimshaw will design a building for Keyworth Street on the site of the student union. The structure, developed in partnership with the NHS Strategic Health Authority for South East London, will provide homes for the faculty of health and social care and the education department, as well as sports and exercise science facilities.
Lifschutz Davidson, which this week added director Paul Sandilands to the company name to become Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, will design a student hub, including a student union and a primary care centre, on the site of a former chapel at the junction of Borough Road and Rotary Street.
The project will include the redevelopment, refurbishment and extension of the grade II-listed chapel. LDS has joined up with Tangram Architects, which will be providing specialist health care advice on the development of the primary care centre.
Hornagold & Hills, which is programme manager for the £1.5bn redevelopment of Elephant & Castle for Southwark council, will project manage both schemes. Other firms involved include quantity surveyor Turner & Townsend, building services engineer Faber Maunsell, structural engineer WSP and multidisciplinary engineer Arup.
