Aggreko signs deal for 200MW following earthquake
UK generator hire company Aggreko is to supply power to Japan in the wake of last month鈥檚 earthquake and tsunami.
The company has signed a deal with Tokyo Electric Power Company, owner of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, to provide 200MW of power to the Tokyo Bay area for a minimum one-year term.
Rupert Soames, chief executive of Aggreko said, 鈥淲ithin a few days of the disaster, Aggreko entered into discussions with TEPCO to bring additional power to the grid. TEPCO has moved extremely fast and with great professionalism to define an engineering solution which will bring additional generating capacity to Japan. Aggreko is pleased it is able to be of assistance to the country at this very difficult time.鈥
The contract is for 100MW of gas-fired and 100MW of diesel-fired generation and is expected to start delivering power to the grid in June.
The 11 March 9.0 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami wiped out much of Japan鈥檚 power leading to widespread blackouts across the country.
