Two workers died and three were injured in three incidents last week.
Last Tuesday, a 41-year-old crane driver was killed by a reversing lorry at Dover鈥檚 Eastern Docks. He was employed by Wigan-based contractor Ainscough, which was carrying out repairs on a ferry berth. The company was unavailable for comment.
On Wednesday, a worker on the Corse House water treatment plant in Stewarton, east Ayrshire, was killed while unloading plastic water pipes from the back of a lorry. The 64 year old sustained head injuries when the pipes came loose and later died in hospital.
The worker was employed by GMJV 鈥 a joint venture between Galliford Try and Morgan Est.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is carrying out investigations into both deaths.
On Tuesday a concrete block fell on three construction workers from a crane at Brixton Road, south London. An eyewitness said: 鈥淭he crane dropped a block and one builder was stretchered away. Another was put in a wheelchair.鈥 The HSE said all three men were back on site after three days so the accident would not be investigated.
The Construction Safety Campaign is staging a protest at the HSE鈥檚 offices in London on Monday morning against proposed staff cuts at the executive and the recent spate of crane-related fatalities.
