Body bids to save money by lengthening contracts as it starts procurement process for next wave
Transport Scotland has extended the contracts for two of its trunk roads by a year to the end of March 2012.
The North-west contract is held by Scotland Transerv, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel, and the South West contract is served by Amey.
Transport Scotland said that it is beginning the procurement process for the next generation of trunk road contracts in 2012.
Jim Barton, chief road engineer and director of Transport Scotland, said that the extension was made in order to save public money.
鈥淓xtending these contracts builds on the benefits already delivered including excellent value for money and efficiency savings on the previous contracts, for the public purse.
鈥淭he current contracts were developed in 2003 and much has changed since then with sustainability and climate change acting as key influencers in our road maintenance activities.
鈥淭his decision allows work to carry on as normal while we continue our efforts to ensure the new contracts reflect current best practice, offer opportunities for collaboration and deliver best value for money for the tax-payer,鈥 he said.
A supplier information day will be held at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on 12 October later this year.
