Shadow housing minister hints housebuilders would no longer have to use apprentices on publicly funded projects

Grant Shapps, the shadow minister for housing, has hinted that he will do away with the requirement for housebuilders to use apprentices on publicly funded projects.

Speaking at the Housing Market Intelligence Conference in London on Tuesday, Shapps accused the government of forcing the 鈥渘ew conditions鈥� on developers.

He said: 鈥淲hen and if I鈥檓 housing minister, I won鈥檛 get down to the details about whom you need to employ to build your homes. It鈥檚 ridiculous and counterproductive.鈥�

Shapps confirmed that he had no plans for central housebuilding targets, although he added that the next Tory government planned to beat the average number of homes built during the previous three parliaments.
