Competition for south and north parks attracts international architects
Ten teams led by international architects including David Kohn, Ushida Findley, Heneghan Peng and West 8 have been shortlisted in a competition to design two major new areas for the post-games Olympic Park.
The Olympic Park Legacy Company yesterday announced the shortlist of teams for the south park and the north park 鈥 which together it says will bring a 鈥渧ibrant mix of cultural events, beautiful spaces and recreational uses鈥.
The centrepiece of the new work will be a major new public space to welcome crowds to the south park. Sitting between the aquatics centre, the stadium, the ArcelorMittal Orbit and the 2012 gardens, this will include a visitor centre, water features, play facilities and host festivals and performances.
The second area will be set within the grassy river valley in the north park and will comprise playgrounds and a visitor centre with a caf茅 and seating terrace, along with indoor multi-purpose space for community-use.
New chief of design at the Olympic Park Legacy Company Kathryn Firth - formerly a director at PLP Architecture - said: 鈥淭he design competition has attracted worldwide interest from award winning practices wanting to create a lasting and influential design in one of the world鈥檚 great cities.
鈥淲e have a dynamic mix of international and home grown talent that we expect to come forward with cutting edge designs for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.鈥
