Liverpool鈥檚 world heritage status will be put at risk if property investor Peel Holdings presses ahead with its proposed 拢5.5bn Liverpool Waters scheme.

Sources claim Unesco will recommend stripping the city of its status unless 鈥渞adical鈥� changes are made to the 60 hectare waterfront project, according to the Liverpool Daily Post.

The warning came after Unesco inspectors completed a three-day inspection of the proposed regeneration site.

The 1.3million m² Chapman Taylor-designed scheme includes the 55-storey Shanghai Tower - destined to become the tallest building in the UK outside London 鈥� and other flats, shops and restaurants.

Unesco is expected to produce a report for Liverpool council and Peel Holdings shortly before Christmas.
