US practice to oversee 拢500m development to help regenerate Indian city

American architect Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) is overseeing the 拢500m redesign of a Bombay shanty town.

The firm, best known for skyscrapers like the 拢2bn Burj Dubai, is designing new homes for 125,000 residents in the Santa Cruz area of the city.

Property developer Unitech plans to build a series of low-rise apartment blocks as part of a wider regeneration effort in the Indian city.

The scheme is the latest in a series of developments designed to upgrade the lifestyle of communities around India.

Last month, it emerged UK firm Gleeds had been appointed consultant on a project to build hundreds of new towns across the subcontinent.
