Seven international consortia are in a race to develop one of Britain’s biggest city-centre retail schemes.

The teams shortlisted for the 100 000 m2 mixed-use scheme at Paradise Street in Liverpool include:

  • Developers Grosvenor Developments and Henderson with architect ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Design Partnership

  • Developer Peel Holdings with architect Chapman Taylor Partners

  • Developers Land Securities and Lend Lease with Leslie Jones Architects

  • Developer Hammerson with Benoy Architects.

    The other teams are led by Capital Shopping Centres, Dutch developer Multi-Development Corporation and Australian firm Westfield, which is also working with Benoy Architects.

The teams will design the redevelopment of a rundown 3.6 ha area linking Paradise Street with Church Street. Liverpool City Council hopes to see a project that includes a cultural centre, hotel, office and residential elements.

The council is working closely with Liverpool Vision, a public-private urban regeneration company set up in July 1999 and led by former Wimpey chairman Joe Dwyer. Together, they will aim to ensure the co-ordination of the proposals in Paradise Street and the emerging masterplan for the city centre.

Architects Rem Koolhaas and Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners are understood to be among those that have put in bids to design the regeneration masterplan in the past month.

The shortlisted consortia will present outline proposals for Paradise Street to the council next month. The preferred development partner will be chosen in February.
