Architectural competitions launched for new galleries at its South Kensington
The Science Museum has launched three competitions to find architects to design new galleries at its South Kensington base.
The three permanent galleries will all open by 2018 with two 鈥 an interactive gallery and one about maths 鈥 due to open in 2016. New medicine galleries will open two years later.
Museum masterplan and estates director Karen Livingstone said: 鈥淲e want to work with architects with the ideas and creativity to match our vision for this museum and ambition for our visitors, whether that鈥檚 practices with a long-standing pedigree in similar projects or dynamic firms looking to make their mark in this field.鈥
The medicine galleries will double the size of the museum鈥檚 current galleries and will tell the story of how medicine has transformed lives over the past 400 years. The museum has given firms until 30 May to put in expressions of interest for this work.
Practices have also been given the same date for the maths gallery while firms have until June 11 to register interest in the interactive gallery.
Winners for all three schemes will be named at the end of the summer.
