Education secretary Michael Gove reveals funding breakdown and announces regulation consultation

More than 100 local authorities will share a 拢500m fund for school building work to address urgent shortfalls in pupil places, education secretary Michael Gove has revealed.

Gove has today published a list of those local authorities that will receive money under the funding programme, announced in June.

In the latest stage of the government鈥檚 response to the James review on the future of school building, Gove also announced a twelve week consultation on the revision of school premises regulations.

The 拢500m will fund mainly smaller primary school projects, which means that it could benefit SMEs as well as larger firms working with local authorities as part of bigger packaged deals.

Gove said: 鈥淚 understand the economic situation means difficult choices need to be made about how to direct funding but I urge local authorities to target resources at managing the shortfalls in pupils places wherever they are most needed.鈥

He added that further capital allocations for basic need and maintenance pressures in schools would be announced 鈥渓ater in the year鈥.
