Station will connect largest offshore wind farm in Europe with National Grid
Architect RMJM has released concept images of an onshore substation for the 拢2bn London Array, which is set to be the largest offshore wind farm in Europe.
The substation will be located at Cleve Hill near Graveney in Kent and will connect the London Array plant with the National Grid. It will also act as a sculptural shelter for transformers and electrical equipment.
Matt Cartwright, the RMJM director responsible for the project, said the line of modular structures was inspired by a row of beach huts near to the substation.
He said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be working on such a progressive, sustainable project that is dedicated to providing renewable energy to the UK, whilst respecting the local landscape and creating an architectural focal point for the area. Through close collaboration with London Array and the local planning authority, we created a design that fuses art, architecture and engineering.鈥
The London Array project, to be located off the coasts of Kent and Essex, will generate 1,000MW of electricity to power up to 750,000 homes.
