The RIBA is set to develop a key performance indicator for design and develop benchmarks to measure architects鈥 performance.

The move was announced at last week鈥檚 RIBA council meeting, where the association鈥檚 practice committee proposed ideas to bring the profession in line with the rest of the construction industry in implementing Sir John Egan鈥檚 Rethinking Construction manifesto.

Architects fear that current Egan thinking focuses too much on the process, rather than the quality of the product, according to the committee. 鈥淲e need to urgently develop KPIs for the product,鈥 the committee concluded.

Architects are worried that the Egan report undermines the value of design, by placing most of the responsibility for more efficient delivery with contractors.
