The RIBA has announced the launch of a design competition for four seafront shelters and a kiosk for Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex. 

Organised by the RIBA Competitions Office on behalf of Rother District Council鈥檚 Next Wave Project, the project鈥檚 construction value of 拢220,000 is part of a wider 拢5 million cultural regeneration programme. CABE has donated 拢1 million of funding under its SeaChange Programme.

Consisting of a series of urban development strategies, the projects are focused on a core area of Bexhill鈥檚 seafront, where the famous modernist De La Warr Pavilion is located.

Architects are encouraged to develop designs for high quality structures that will help lift the area鈥檚 place-making and regenerative objectives of the Next Wave Project, enhancing the experience of visiting Bexhill鈥檚 seafront.

Niall McLaughlin, architect and a member of the jury panel, said: 鈥淭he Bexhill competition offers practices the opportunity to make innovative architecture in a special seafront setting. The relationship to the sea and the long promenade is very interesting.  The proximity of the De La Warr Pavilion gives the project a special importance.  Our bandstand was an RIBA Competition winner ten years ago and, although tiny, it allowed us to think experimentally about architecture in a way not always afforded by bigger projects鈥�.

The deadline for stage one design submissions is Wednesday 12 August 2009.
