World famous architect is the latest star architet to design a hospice for the cancer charity
Rem Koolhaas is the latest internationally-renowned architect to design a Maggie’s Centre in Scotland.
Koolhaas will join Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Richard Rogers on the list of architects who have designed hospices for the cancer care organisation.
The Dutch architect’s £2.1m centre will be built at Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow. It will be the second in the city; there are others in Edinburgh, Fife, Dundee and Inverness. A centre in Lanarkshire is also in the pipeline.
The inspiration for using noted architects to design the centres came from the organisation’s founder, Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died in 1996.
Hadid’s centre in Fife, opened last year, won an award for Best Public ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV in the 2007 Scottish Design Awards.
Funding for the hospice will be raised by a charity walk to be undertaken in Edinburgh during the summer.
