Expressions of interest sought for 38.5ha scheme to become 1,000-home community after Commonwealth Games
Glasgow city council has invited expressions of interest from developers in delivering the athletes' village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The village, on a 38.5ha site in Dalmarnock at the heart of the Clyde Gateway regeneration area, must provide accommodation and facilities for 6,500 competitors and officials, with contingency provision for an extra 1,500.
After the Games it will become a 1,000-home community, including 300 BREEAM 鈥淓xcellent鈥-rated homes for rent and a 120-bed elderly care home. Removal of temporary facilities - which will be provided independently - will release additional housing land to the developer.
The site will be made available at nil cost initially in order to reduce borrowing requirements, with the appointed development partner required to enter into a profit-sharing arrangement with the council at the end of the project.
The city council wants the village to incorporate high levels of sustainability and to bring community benefits in the form of employment and training opportunities and the nurturing of small to medium-sized enterprises and social enterprises.
The deadline applications from developers is 11 August. A shortlist of potential development partners will be drawn up in September and the preferred developer named next spring.
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow city council, said: 鈥淭he creation of the athletes' village offers Glasgow's people and employers the chance to build what will be a global showcase for our city and country. Through this they can develop skills and business networks that will be of tremendous benefit long after the athletes have gone.
鈥淎fter the Games, the village area will become a vibrant neighbourhood, a flagship for the regeneration of Glasgow's East End and a visible reminder of the legacy of the Games. 鈥
