This is the corner block of a 5.8ha development known as the Darb-Al-Khalil, that has just started on site just south of the Great Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Designed by Gensler, the masterplan has been created to avoid major clogging and safety hazards during high pilgrimage season while maximising space for four-star hotels, apartments, retail, praying areas and parking. The presence of underground holy waters limits basement depth to 7m below grade level, meaning that the foundations will be made from drilled caissons.
