First phase of former Llanwern steelworks approved

Housebuilder Persimmon has been given planning consent for the 307-home first phase of its redevelopment of the former Llanwern Steelworks near Newport, designed by Barton Willmore.

The permission is the first detailed approval on the overall 拢1bn Glan Llyn masterplan from Persimmon and developer St Modwen, which envisages 4,000 homes and 6,000 jobs on the site alongside schools, shops a police station and a library.

Barton Willmore design director Avril Chadwick, said: 鈥淕lan Llyn is a landmark development, helping to transform a former brownfield site into a vibrant urban community. This is only the first phase of the development and will form just one part in the wider regeneration of Newport.鈥�
