The UK’s largest covered ice-rink is the latest addition to the Eden Project in Cornwall. The temporary building opened last week to stage the 10th birthday celebrations of the National Lottery. It was designed and built in eight weeks by contractor Edwin Shirley Staging, temporary building designer Bill Harkin Associates and structural engineer Buro Happold. Its fabric roof and 42 m steel trusses can be dismantled and put up again to stage other outdoor events. Meanwhile, the project’s education resource centre, designed by architect Grimshaw and structural engineer Anthony Hunt Associates, is being built by a joint venture of Sir Robert McAlpine and Alfred McAlpine.
