Site of 18th-century jail to be developed into mixed-use scheme
Work on the redevelopment of Northallerton鈥檚 now-demolished prison into a 拢17m mixed-use scheme is expected to begin next year after being given the go-ahead by planners last week.
The Treadmills project, designed by the Harris Partnership and given the green light by Hambleton district council, will be developed by the Central Northallerton Development Company, a joint venture between the council, which bought the site for 拢1.4m three years ago, and Wykeland Group.
A spokesman for Wykeland said a contractor would be appointed early next year to start work on the job in North Yorkshire鈥檚 county town in the spring.
The prison closed in 2013 after housing convicts for more than 230 years and a large part of the structure was later demolished.
The scheme will feature retail, residential, leisure and office space and incorporate five grade II-listed buildings including a women鈥檚 wing and cell block and the governor鈥檚 house which remained in place after the prison鈥檚 demolition.
Cost consultant on the scheme is LHL Group.
