A Ted Cullinan-designed Maggie鈥檚 cancer-support centre has been officially opened at Newcastle鈥檚 Freeman Hospital
It is the 16th centre built by the charity Maggie鈥檚 to offer emotional, practical, and social support to people with cancer.
Cullinan said the centre, which boasts a roof that is part-planted and part covered with photovoltaic cells, was a seasonally-responsive structure.
鈥淲ith courtyard doors thrown open in summer or chairs clustered around a central fireplace in winter, the centre offers spaces of repose and retreat, prospect and refuge,鈥 he said.
The main contractor on the project was Mansell; the project manager was Schofield Lothian and the QS was Turner & Townsend.
