Government approves 13 new University Technical Colleges, with partners including Laing O鈥橰ourke and Galliford Try

The government has approved 13 new University Technical Colleges, with partners for the projects including contractors Galliford Try and Laing O鈥橰ourke.

The Department for Education confirmed that the 13 University Technical Colleges (UTCs), specialising in technical subjects ranging from engineering to biomedical science, would be set to open by September 2014.

The new colleges include:

North East Greater Manchester UTC, which will specialise in sustainable engineering and construction, partnering with Laing O鈥橰ourke and LG Energy Solutions

Medway UTC in Chatham, Kent, which will specialise in engineering and construction, with partners including BAE Systems, Denne Construction and the Royal School of Military Engineers.

The South Devon UTC, focusing on engineering and water and environmental science, with partners including Galliford Try

The 13 UTCs will join 27 that are preparing to open and five that have already opened.

Schools minister Lord Nash said: 鈥淚 am delighted with the very strong field of UTC proposals we are progressing to the next stage.鈥

鈥淭he growing number of top employers and universities involved in UTCs underlines the importance of making rigorous technical education an option for young people.鈥

鈥淚t is vitally important that young people have the skills and experience wanted by employers, both for their own prosperity and to help us compete in the global race.鈥

The 13 new UTCS are:

London

  • Mulberry UTC in Tower Hamlets, east London, specialising in healthcare and medical services, and digital technology.
  • Tottenham UTC in Haringey, north London, proposed by Tottenham Hotspur football club. It will specialise in the technology of science, sport and health. Its proposer is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
  • London Design and Engineering UTC in Newham, east London.

South-east

  • Medway UTC in Chatham, Kent, which will specialise in engineering and construction, with partners including BAE Systems, Denne Construction and the Royal School of Military Engineers.
  • CleanTech UTC in Newhaven, East Sussex, specialising in environmental and marine engineering.
  • The Watford UTC in Hertfordshire, specialising in computer science, hospitality and tourism.
  • Science UTC Oxfordshire, specialising in science research, engineering and computing.

South-west

  • South Devon UTC, focusing on engineering and water and environmental science. Galliford Try is a partner on this scheme.
  • South Wiltshire Defence Industries UTC in Salisbury, specialising in science and engineering for the defence industries.

West Midlands

  • Burton and South Derbyshire UTC in Burton-upon-Trent, specialising in biomedical science and engineering.
  • Health Futures UTC in Sandwell, specialising in health and health sciences.

East Midlands

  • Derby Manufacturing UTC, which will focus on engineering-related manufacturing, partnering with Rolls-Royce and Toyota.

North-west

  • North East Greater Manchester UTC, which will specialise in sustainable engineering and construction, partnering with Laing O鈥橰ourke and LG Energy Solutions.
