Network Rail Infrastructure has launched a legal battle for compensation a row over a fractured gas pipe in Nottingham.
The company is seeking damages and interest totalling £39,457.40 from Universal Construction Services and UCS Civils, both of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. The two companies are responsible for an incident on October 26 1999 when a gas pipe was fractured on a site at London Road in Nottingham, according to a High court claim. Gas escaped onto land owned by Network Rail, and the railway line had to be closed, causing losses under track access agreements with various train operating companies. Network Rail accuses the two companies of negligence and nuisance, and breach of the Rylands vs Fletcher rule.
