Morrison and Nuttall beat rival bids for the £200m contract to clean up the Olympics site
Morrison and Edward Nuttall have been awarded the £200m contract to clean up the site for the 2012 Olympics Games.
The two companies will share the demolition and clearing of the site in the lower Lea Valley with Nuttall expected to be responsible for the northern part of the site and Morrison for the southern side.
The contract is crucial to the development of the Olympic venues, as most of the land has to be cleared before construction begins in 2008.
The site, which has been used as industrial land for decades, is the largest area of derelict and contaminated land in London.
Morrison began bidding for the project before Galliford Try bought the firm for £42m last month. Alongside Nuttall it beat rival bids from Birse, Kier, May Gurney and Mowlem for the Olympic contract.
The London Development Agency advertised the scheme in April last year, but the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) will now take responsibility for the project. The ODA is expected to appoint its delivery partner to oversee construction of the Olympic venues next month.
