Carillion confirmed that Steve Goulston, managing director of McAlpine鈥檚 building division, and Steve Smith, managing director of its civils arm, had left.

It is understood that nine regional directors who reported to them have also departed. These are believed to include Graham Simpson, Alan Garner and Terry O鈥機onnor from the civils business.

A former staff member said many more were planning to leave, and that Carillion鈥檚 competitors were vying to attract those executives that had left.

The news follows reports that senior McAlpine staff have been unhappy with Carillion鈥檚 refusal to agree lucrative pay-offs for departing staff.

We expect the merger to create well north of 1,000 jobs.

Ian Grice, the former chief executive; Matt Swan, managing director; Mark Greenwood, finance director; and Chris Lee, company secretary, have already left.

A Carillion spokesperson was unable to confirm specific names but said 鈥渢ens鈥� of senior staff would leave, in order to avoid duplication of roles and create a flatter management structure.

He said: 鈥淚n total a few hundred will go immediately, including back office staff, but we expect the benefits of the merger will create well north of 1,000 jobs.鈥�
