Former shadow schools secretary and Tory housing spokesperson secures place in Cabinet

Michael Gove is to be the new schools secretary in the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government.

Gove, former shadow schools secretary, caused controversy during the election campaign when he accused architects of 鈥渃reaming off cash鈥 under the government鈥檚 好色先生TV Schools for the Future programme.

He later apologised for the remarks, stating that the Conservative Party was aware of how tough the recession has been on architects.

Before entering the shadow cabinet, Gove was the Tories' housing spokesperson, a role which he used to attack the government's home information packs in the House of Common.

Gove had been tipped as a possible home secretary.

During the coalition negotiations following the inconclusive election result, Gove had said he would be prepared to give up a Cabinet post to secure a deal with the Lib Dems.
