Consultant awarded ACE Engineering Excellence Awards for largest operational geothermal heating and cooling system at Gloucestershire police HQ
Property consultant McBains Cooper has won the low-carbon technology award at the ACE Engineering Excellence Awards 2008 for its geothermal heating and cooling solution.
It claims to have reduced the carbon footprint of the Gloucestershire police headquarters by 180 tonnes per year.
The firm says the system is the UK’s largest operational geothermal heating and cooling system, featuring 150 boreholes drilled to a depth of 98m, and is making energy savings of up to 40%.
Geothermal energy systems are an efficient heating and cooling solution available today and can be used in all commercial, retail or mixed-use housing developments but are still not widely used in the UK.
Company director Anthony Coumidis, said: "The solution has created a blueprint for the future, and large geothermal systems in commercial developments have now been developed around the country as a result.
"It will create real and lasting change and should make a huge difference to occupiers, developers and the environment alike."
The £20m police office headquarters and training building has qualified for a BREEAM "excellent" classification and has a carbon rating of 13.5kgC/m²/year, compared to 18.5kgC/m²/year for a conventional building.
McBains Cooper was also highly commended in the sustainability category for the same project.
