Lead architect was also responsible for rival Arsenal’s ground
Populous’ new stadium for Tottenham Hotspur has won planning permission.
The 61,000-seater stadium, which will see the club move from White Hart Lane in time for the 2018/19 season, was approved by Haringey council after a planning meeting that dragged into the early hours of Thursday.
It will also see nearly 600 new homes built, a 180-bed hotel, an extreme sports centre, a community health centre and a square for events. Mace was appointed construction manager on the project last month.
The architect leading the design, Australian Christopher Lee, was also behind the design of the Emirates Stadium, home of Spurs’ north London rivals, Arsenal.
The stadium will have a retractable pitch allowing American football games to be played as well as soccer. The club signed a 10-year deal with the NFL to host at least two games a year from 2018.
The work will include the demolition of some buildings but 10 listed buildings will be restored. One, Warmington House on Tottenham High Road, will be converted into a Spurs museum.
Councillors said the plan would support their regeneration plans for Tottenham, including 4,000 new homes and better transport links in the neighbouring High Road West and Northumberland Park areas.
The news comes in the same week that Brentford and AFC Wimbledon’s stadiums were approved. Chelsea’s plans by Herzog & de Meuron and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands are heading towards planning.
