A London architect has put two senior staff on a one-day week in a sign of the increasingly drastic measures that consultants are taking to cut costs

Haskoll, a retail and mixed-use specialist, made 40% of its 69-strong workforce redundant in November last year. Three of those staff, whose three months鈥 notice ended in February, were then asked to stay on for another month on the reduced working hours. This has since been extended indefinitely. Two accepted the offer.

A source close to the firm said: 鈥淭he idea was to keep the management-level staff on so they could switch back to more days if workload picked up.鈥

Haskoll鈥檚 projects include the Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington, the extension of the MetroCentre in Gateshead and small jobs within the Eden Project.

Haskoll鈥檚 managing director Derek Barker would not comment directly on the news but said: 鈥淲e are doing our best to keep as many people as possible.鈥
