Joe Anderson wants to turn city into hub for sector
Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson has unveiled plans to expand the city鈥檚 Knowledge Quarter and turn a former school into a new development specialising in life and medical sciences.
The planned 1.8 million sq ft development at Minshull Street on the edge of the city centre will include Grade A office space.
Anderson said the scheme would form part of the Knowledge Quarter Mayoral Development Zone, with the first phase of this likely to begin on site next year.
The plans will also include a new rail station with access to the existing underground network and the main rail network via Lime Street Station.
Anderson said he hoped the plan would reverse the drift south of jobs in the life sciences sector and would create 10,000 new jobs in the city.
He added: 鈥淲e know there is a real north/south gap in investment around life sciences that sees an overwhelming concentration of jobs and investment head south. However this landmark scheme provides the basis for Liverpool to now become a national and international destination for investment in life and medical sciences.鈥
