Laing O’Rourke lined up for main contractor role on St James’s Quarter regeneration project
Laing O’Rourke is being lined up to build the £850m St James Quarter commercial development in Edinburgh following an agreement to work on enabling works including logisitics and construction risks with developer TH Real Estate.
The contractor is already working on a consultancy basis on the project and is likely to build the 850,000sq ft of retail space and 250 homes that will make up St James.
Laing O’Rourke is currently constructing a 20,000 sq ft infill building to allow John Lewis to continue trading throughout the project build.
The enabling works are scheduled to finish spring/summer next year, before 18 months of demolition works begin with building scheduled to begin towards the end of 2017.
The scheme has been masterplanned by Allan Murray Architects with technical designs from BDP but was placed on hold in 2012 before a new funding deal between Edinburgh council, the Scottish government, and developer TIAA Henderson Real Estate (TH Real Estate) was reached in 2014 to unlock the development.
